2006 (Virtual) Running Club
Happy New Year, it's 2006. I don't know about you, but it's time to decide what you might want to do and/or accomplish in the coming year. Have we got an opportunity for you.Last year a few of us, Dave Coleman, Jeff Holocher, Vicki Holocher, Leslea Swanson and myself decided to run the Bolder Boulder on Memorial Day. We trained for it, ran it and decided to run another race, the Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half Marathon in August. This year it's your turn. With the same goals or races you to can shed some unwanted pounds or help that ticker beat a little slower and stronger next time you go to the Doc for that physical.
You might be intimidated at the thought of running, but don't be. You will be amazed at the progress you can make by committing to a running regiment that puts you on the path or street four times a week. My idea on the club is everyone join in and have a Level One commitment to run the Bolder Boulder on Memorial Day (roughly 6 miles). After you are successful, you may continue on to Level Two , the Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half Marathon in August (roughly 13 miles). There are two marathons in October in the Denver area if you want to take it to Level Three. This level is surely optional, but some stout at heart and strong in body may decide to pursue this level of club membership. Currently there is one club member that is at Level Three, her name is Vicki Holocher and she has already completed a full marathon is signed up to run another in May.
The club will be very simple. It will act as an accountablility tool to help each of us complete our running goal. The communication will be weekly and will be done by email. There will be a semi-organized run each Saturday morning for anyone who would be interested. The Saturday runs would be on a progressive scale on increments of length leading up to the race. Outside these Saturday runs, everyone would be responsible to train alone or together as much as they would like. The club will help or suggest time/distance training for each week to help you progress to the point where you can successfully complete your goal.
This can be the year. The year you get off the couch and get after it. Accomplish something that you might never have thought possible. We already have had quite a lot of interest in the club so now we are looking for some Level One commitments. You might say this is where "the rubber meets the road"; this is when "it's time to put up or shut up"; or this is when "it's time to put the hay in the barn": whatever the cliche' the bottom line is it's time and it's easy. In the words of Rob Schneider in Waterboy "You can do it!!!!!!".
Let us know if you're in. Also, please forward this to anyone you think might be interested in joining you and us in this running club.
